We visited Chilean Patagonia in November-December of 2023.
Parque Nacional Pali Aike is on the Argentine border in the arid steppes of northern Magallanes 196km northeast of Punta Arenas. The lava flows and spatter cones extend well into Argentina. The volcanic caves hold some of South America's earliest archeological sites, the predecessors of the few surviving Tehuelche and Kaweskar (Alacaluf) peoples and the nearly extince Selke'nam (Ona) and Yummnan (Yahgan). Reserach here was done in the 1930s by the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
